Match report Fives and Heronians lost their unbeaten start to the season in both league and cup with a comprehensive 7 wicket defeat to Wickford at the Patmore Memorial Ground on Saturday in SNEL division one.

Having won the toss and electing to bat first, Fives were soon in trouble when Gary Edwards was caught in the slips for 4 with the score 11-1.

Ed Buxton (21) with Gordon Whorlow (44) added 40 for the 2nd wicket before the former fell lbw to left-arm seamer Andy Baker (3-41) and with Dan Stevens making just 9 the visitors were soon 66-3.

Whorlow and Carlos Remy (34) added 47 for the 4th wicket but both were out to spin twins Matthew Nobes and Chirag Desai to leave Fives 131-5 with just 12 overs remaining in the innings.

Glenn Jackson (36 off 41 balls, 3x4, 2x6) and Terry Ballard (21 off 16, 1x4, 2x6) added 38 in quick time to rescue the innings yet again but both were out trying to keep the quick scoring going and it was left to the lower order of Rahul Bhome (12 not out) and Johnny Kay (8 not out) to push the Fives total up over 200 with the declaration coming at the end of the 52 overs with Fives 203-8.

A close finish as last week’s win over Westcliff looked on the cards with the pitch offering help for the bowlers but Fives lacked any sort of control with the ball (no maidens were bowled) and an opening stand of 130 between Ross Daynes (68) and captain Desai (71) virtually ended the hopes of the visitors.

Despite managing to pick-up two further wickets and a bowling bonus point, Wickford strolled to victory with only 8 overs of the last 20 bowled to win by 7 wickets.

Fives however collected 9 points from the match despite the defeat and travel to local neighbours Chingford next Saturday.
