Match report FIVES & HERONIANS suffered an eight-wicket defeat at the hands of an impressive Chingford at the weekend.

Having batted first, Fives made their way to a competitive score of 210-7, spearheaded by Gary Edwards' unbeaten 98, including 12 fours, but it was to prove in vain.

Edwards was the most impressive of Fives' batsmen, and there was little else to cheer at the crease, although Rahul Bhome made 39 at a run-a-ball further down the order and Jason Whiting contributed 26, with three fours and two sixes.

Their efforts, however, were not enough to propel Fives past a stout Chingford, and there were notable disappointments with the bat, in particular opener Gordon Whorlow's tally of 13, before he was bowled.

Ed Buxton had made only 10 by the time he was stumped and Daniel Stevens, capable of a significant knock when he is in the mood, managed just two runs before falling to an lbw decision.

Glenn Jackson was run out for seven, while captain Terry Ballard and Jamie Porter could muster only four runs apiece.

Fives' capitulation at the crease, Edwards aside, gave Chingford the encouragement they needed to whittle down their opponents' total.

Their openers, in particular, carried the fight and dispatched Fives' bowling to all parts of the ground.

Robert Whitfield had amassed 91 before being bowled by Johnny Kay, who was the pick of the attack, returning economical figures of 1-37 from his 12 overs, including three maidens.

James Hill remained unbeaten on 89 as although Sam Cirnon was caught by Buxton off the bowling of Porter, the game had long since slipped through Fives' fingers.

Alfie Taylor then came to the crease and quickly saw his side home, with an unbeaten 18 from 21 balls, as Fives were comfortably defeated.

Fives host table-toppers Loughton this weekend.
