Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Loughton on Sat 30 May 2009 at 1 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 45 runs
Match report
Fives and Heronians moved to the summit of division one in the SNEL after completing a superb 45 run win against local rivals Loughton.
Gary Edwards wonderful unbeaten 104 off 148 balls with 12 fours laid the solid foundation for the Fives victory at The Paddock although it wasn't easy going for the hosts.
Essex staffer Tony Palladino was in fine form bowling 16 straight overs with figures of 3-36 inc. 7 maidens as he took the first three Fives batters to fall (Jason Whiting 10, Ed Buxton 22, Dan Stevens 0) and at that stage Fives were struggling on 72-3. Later on Mike Hughes smacked 6 fours and 6 sixes in his blistering 74 off 48 balls and Loughton were favourites with him at the crease but despite leaking 28 in 7 consecutive balls, Rahul Bhome kept his composure to bowl Hughes which turned the tide back in the home sides favour.
After the 3 early wickets to fall, Edwards and Carlos Remy (66 off 60 balls) built an excellent 4th wicket partnership of 125 with watchful defence and then controlled hitting. That paved the way for the in-form Glenn Jackson to smack 38 not out from just 18 balls with 4 sixes, 1 four and a five thanks to an overthrow as Loughton lost their way and Fives took advantage to rack up 262-4 from 52 overs as Edwards completed his fine ton in the last over before the declaration came.
In the Loughton reply, Johnny Kay bowled Aussie overseas player Seb Gallagher first ball before star player Rizwan Quershi ran himself out for just 6 taking on Bhomes arm to fine leg to leave the visitors struggling on 10-2.
Captain Gazza James (41) and Usman Jan (63) steadied the ship and then pushed on before Bhome got through the defences of James to leave Loughton on 90-3.
Jan and Hughes' onslaught then ensued until Kay, who switched to the pavilion end, got Jan to clip to Ed Buxton to deep square leg who took a good catch with the sun shining in his eyes.
Bhome then got Palladino to chip to Jackson who took a superb diving catch at deep mid-wicket and after bowling Hughes the visitors were 210-5.
Michael Gymer then produced a carbon-copy of Palladino's wicket as Jackson took another great catch as the visitors to their credit keep going for the 263 target.
Fives brilliant fielding continued as keeper Jason Whiting showed his sharp reactions to run out Khan off Kay as the batter hit the ball into his pads which deflected behind him only for Whiting to gather the ball and whip the bails off.
Bhome then bowled Richard Gymer and tempted last man Gareth James jnr to drive to Buxton at cover as Fives completed the 45 run win as Loughton were all out for 217 after 36 overs.
Off-spinner Bhome finished with remarkable figures of 6-82 from 11 overs whilst Kay took 2-65 from 14.
Fives travel to Hornchurch on Saturday before hosting Stanmore in the 2nd round of the London Regional cup on Sunday.
