Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost By 3 Wickets

Match report Fives and Heronians slipped back to second in SNEL division one after another closely fought match which saw the Paddock outfit fall to a 3 wicket defeat.

Skip Terry Ballard won the toss and elected to bat on a Harrow Lodge Park strip which had seen some overnight and early morning rain. Hornchurch quick’s Cameron Nupier (3-60) and Jamie Went kept things tight early on in tricky conditions with Nupier getting through the defences of Jason Whiting for 13 after an opening stand of 35 with Gary Edwards.

After his unbeaten ton last week (not to mention 98 not out the week before), Edwards was looking in fine fettle again sharing a 2nd wicket partnership of 62 with Ed Buxton who looked to be returning to somewhere near his best with 37.

However, from 97-1 Fives slipped to 119-5 as change bowlers Billy Gordon (3-65) and Craig Smith (2-50) turned the screw with some accurate medium pace bowling. Edwards was caught behind by home captain Paul Murray for 38 off Smith, Buxton then fell in the same way off Gordon who then took a smart catch to send back Dan Stevens for 10 off the bowling of Nupier who had then returned to the attack to keep the pressure on Fives.

Glenn Jackson (20) and Gordon Whorlow steadied the ship with 44 for the 6th wicket until Nupier bounced Jackson out after a series of fast bouncers which then brought TB to the crease.

Ballard proceeded to smack a top innings score of 49 from just 30 balls including 6 fours and a huge six off Whitlock and when he fell with the score 226-7 thanks to adding 63 with Whorlow, Fives were well placed and had already secured maximum batting bonus points.

Despite Rahul Bhome falling first ball, Jamie Porter (9 not out) and Whorlow (37 not out) played some attractive shots in the final few overs as the visitors racked up 250-8 thanks a Whorlow four from the final ball of the 52 as the declaration came.

Paul Murray who had already taken four catches and a stumping during the Fives innings, was then dropped early on by his counterpart Whiting but despite the setback and a first wicket stand of 58, Ballard’s men then ripped through the hosts top order with Johnny Kay having Gordon caught behind for 23 then trapping Mark Ede lbw first ball.

Carlos Remy then bowled 10 steady overs (2-38) to account for Aussie Nupier (5) caught by Whiting and Sealey to another splendid Jackson catch for 11.

Bhome then dismissed Bones for 0 as Stevens took a fantastic reaction catch at silly mid-on and at 105-5 going into the last hour, Fives looked favourites for another excellent victory.

However, Murray had other ideas and with Glenn Noller (57) the pair ran and hit their way to a 6th wicket stand of exactly 100 until Bhome ousted Noller lbw.

Craig Smith then entered the crease and smacked an unbeaten 25 despite the loss of Murray for a brilliant 120 as Hornchurch scrapped home by 3 wickets in the final over.

Next Saturday sees another away trip for The Paddock side, this time to Hutton.
