Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Orsett on Sat 20 Jun 2009 at 1 pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Fives & Heronians had to settle for a first draw of the season against Orsett at The Paddock in slipping to fourth in SNEL division one.

TB won the toss and elected to bowl and that decision was rewarded in just the 2nd over as Jamie Porter (1-67) produced an edge from Shakeel Iqbal’s bat which was neatly taken by Jason Whiting behind the sticks.

Four of Orsett’s top five made it into the twenties but Fives continued to take regular wickets with Johnny Kay the pick bowling a marathon 17 overs, 6 maidens (5 on the trot at one stage), 3-56.

Terry Ballard (2-37) and Rahul Bhome (2-66) were the other home players to bowl and also collected wickets for their efforts.

Glenn Jackson (again) and Nick Rotsey took good catches and a run-out from Saul Foulds all meant the hosts were very much on top going into the final 7 overs as Orsett fell to 183-9 despite a hard hit 51 from Shahid Khan.

However, the game first turned on a dramatic last wicket stand between Jim Ewing (36 not out) and Lewis Lockyer (14 not out) who swung their way to add 60 unbeaten as the visitors reached 243-9 declared from 52 overs.

Despite the final wicket stand, Jason Whiting again looked to be making light of the target by smashing 55 off just 29 balls with his 50 arriving off just 27 balls – one less than last week’s effort at Hutton!!!

After 10 fours and 2 sixes of mayhem, Whiting holed out to long-on, however, the in-form Gary Edwards and Ed Buxton kept the scoreboard ticking over with some nicely timed shots after the frantic start to the innings.

But Khan, after his 51, then wreaked havoc with his slow left armers as he trapped Buxton lbw for 26, Nick Rotsey in the same fashion for 0 and Terry Ballard stumped for 0 too as Fives strong middle order collapsed. Alex Karkoski also accounted for Jackson (6) and Phil Apps (4) as Fives fell to 155-6 from 100-1.

However, Rahul Bhome showed his batting prowess with a cool 31 off 35 balls as Edwards earned some support from the other end. Their partnership of 60 for the 7th wicket looked to be turning the game back in the hosts favour until Bhome fell to a superb low return catch off Phillip Landman and with the overs ticking away Fives had to settle for a first draw of the campaign, 28 runs short of victory with 2 wickets still remaining.

Edwards batted throughout the innings for a brilliant 79 not out from 133 balls as the home side finished on 216-8 with Orsett’s final wicket and the batting collapse from Fives preventing TB’s men collecting a fourth win.

Next week for Fives - another home tie against bottom club Basildon.
