Match report A Thrilling Start To The New Season

Game 1

Saturday 9 May 2009

Woodford Wells V Fives & Heronians

On a warm afternoon with clear skies and sun shining one couldn’t ask for a better weather for the start of the new league season. Everyone was rearing to go; the old guard there for experience, the young guns chomping at the bit, a new captain in Keith Oram with high expectations. Could the game match the build up?

The skipper lost the toss and was asked to bat. Braths & new boy Palmer opened gathering runs steadily. First to go was Braths (21) with the score at 39. In walked Britten with a few runs behind him in the friendly matches, the scene was set. Unfortunately it was not his day as he and Palmer fell in quick succession for 13 & 25 respectively. This brought together Phil Apps & Nick Rotsey. They began building the partnership fairly slowly. As they gained confidence, they began stroking the ball firmly to all parts and moved the scored on steadily. Both then got in the zone and fantastic power hitting by both saw Fives gain full batting points without further loss. Apps was crashing boundaries for fun whilst Rotsey played second fiddle but was equally explosive. The innings ended on 273 -3 Rotsey 80 n.o, Apps 98 n.o. with a partnership of 198 unbroken. Apps deserved a century, but this will surely come sooner rather than later.

Wells openers began circumspectly because of good opening spells by Reggie & Jack Jerome. However, with sensible batting they upped the tempo put on approx 90 for the first wicket. McKay was then brought on. His consistent line and length soon brought rewards taking the first wicket. At this point Wells were behind the rate but with wickets in hand. 140 runs were needed off the last twenty. Game on. Simms scored a sensational 137 to keep Wells in the hunt, but energetic fielding by Fives and a fabulous second spell by Jerome just gave Fives the upper hand. As the pressure built the second wicket came by a excellent run out by “young” Braths. A smart catch by Braths removed the dangerous Thisanayan. Andrew Coleman bowling his off-spin to great effect bagged a “five for”. With 3 overs to go it was anyone’s game but Wells momentum was quelled by 2 quick wickets. Needing 12 off the last over Wells failed by 4 runs and Fives by 2 wickets. It was a thrilling end to a very exciting game.

The match certainly did match the build up and expectation. More of the same in the next match please but with a more positive outcome.
