Hainault & Clayhall v Fives & Heronians

In a game punctuated by dropped catches by both sides, a capacity crowd at Frentford saw the second eleven record their third consecutive victory by bowling out the opposition with 6 balls remaining and only 13 runs needed.

Oram performed poorly at the toss and his team was asked to bat first on a warm sunny day and batsman friendly pitch. With the absence of Brathwaite, Apps and Nick Rotsey (surely the leagues tallest opening partnership) were given the task of building a total of over 250. Unfortunately Apps’ good run of form came to an end when he was caught for 13, but Britton and Rotsey seamlessly smashed away until they both holed out on the boundary with the score at about 100 after 15 overs.

A period of consolidation followed with Palmer and James McKay combining to put on around another 100 in more refined fashion. In his first league innings of 2009, McKay suffered unusually quickly from fatigue and went for 53 when he also was caught on the boundary. Palmer continued with great style to 87 and was ably supported by cameo’s from the lower order, which brought the first innings total to a close at 52 overs on 286-7.

An unusually sumptuous tea ensued.

In reply, Hainault & Clayhall lost early wickets and found themselves 50-3. The youthful Jerrom bowled with good pace (with the wind), and the ‘wily’ White shared the early spoils. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the total was proving difficult to defend due to dropped catches and proliferation of full tosses. However, Ashfaq gradually grew in confidence and despite going for a deserved hundred, he picked up several key wickets to keep the game in the balance. The return of Jerrom (a particularly effective second spell bowler) into the attack and a run out soon after proved the turning points.

The opposition number 11 came to the crease with 7 balls remaining and only 13 needed for the win. No chance…a full straight delivery struck the pads and Farnsworth was ‘on hand’ to give the fastest LBW decision since in history (seemingly before it had actually hit the pads) and thereby seal the victory for the F&H heroes.
