Match report 13th June 2nd XI vs Chelmsford @ the Padoock

In a widely anticipated top of the table clash, it was a fixture which never lived up to the headline billing it was given. It was an all round bad day at the office for Fives and Heronians, with a couple of players late for the pre-match preparation in which the skipper injured his back quite badly it was touch and go whether he would be able to keep wicket. Before the toss he spoke to the two players who running late and was assured they would be on time for the start, so the skipper won toss and invited the travelling Chelmsford side to have a bat.
Chelmsford got away to a healthy start through steady batting and gaps in the field, as Fives had only 9 men for 12 overs and only 10 for the first 26 overs. When Fives were back to full complement of players did the contest really start, some fine bowling from Coleman led the fight back with Thrift being dismissed for 87. Coleman finished with figures of 5-81 as Chelsmford amassed 250-8 of there 52 overs which was about 30 runs above par.
In the run chase Fives and Heronians lost the usually reliable Brathwaite without troubling the scorers and even though Britton and Rotsey both made contributions none of the top order caused Chelmsford to take a step backwards. Chelmsford were always in control and never let it slip. It seemed only a matter of time before the bowling side would be celebrating victory. But the combination of youth and experience came together in the form of Jerrom and White to frustrate Chelmsford and maintain hope of a draw. Some fine bowling by Thompson 3-64 and Poole 4-23 moved Chelsmford to the brink of victory but it was Moss who removed Jerrom for a fine 28 leaving Fives and Heronians with the injured skipper to help try and stave off defeat for the 7 overs that remained. White and Oram used their experience to hold their nerve and deny Chelmsford the victory they deserved finishing on 163-9.
It was a case of what might have been had the home side been at full Strength for the duration of the match, and a contest that would have been far closer and more competitive and who knows what the out come would have been.
