Match report Shenfield V Fives & Heronians

On a lovely warm afternoon Fives & H travelled to Shenfield in what was an important fixture for both teams. After a poor performance the previous week Fives & H needed to put in an improved performance. This was not helped by late arrivals and no pre-match practice.

Ben Britton captained, due to the loss of Oram through injury, and won the toss but was forced to bat. Five lost an early wicket, but Britton (28) & Brathwaite (31) steadied the ship and put on 50 for the second wicket. The introduction of Salisbury slowed the scoring rate. Britton & Brathwaite fell in quick succession. Harding (37) & Mackay then steadied the ship. Fives & H then lost wickets at regular intervals, most batsmen getting a start but not going on. Bilal proved to be Fives best batsman with a well constructed 49no. Fives finished on 235, with no batsman reaching 50.

Shenfield had a poor start, losing 3 quick wickets. Waqas (2/27) causing the early damage with his accuracy and movement. Shenfield then consolidated. Allen (82) was dropped 3 times. Colman (6-94) with his deadly off-breaks and Bilal (1-41) were then introduced to the attack with Shenfield needing 120 off the last 20 overs. Some tight bowling and spectacular ground fielding, kept Fives in contention. However, Shenfield lost wickets at regular intervals and in the end held on for the draw, closing on 212-9. Unfortunately, Harding who had taken a fantastic catch earlier dropped the last man in the slip in the penultimate over.

This was a good team performance with many positives. However, we must heed to the old adage “catches wins matches”. Had we taken our catches we would have won and be joint top with Chelmsford.
