Match report Fives & Heronians v Ilford

The make up of the 2nd XI continues to be as unrecognisable as a Michael Jackson passport photo, but unlike the King of Pop, F&H 2s continue to impress the watching crowds. This week was no exception, where F & H snatched a hard fought victory from Ilford.

In slightly humid conditions Ilford won the toss and elected to field and within a short space of time had made inroads into the top order batting. In fact the F & H batting card was exceptional only for the fact that R McKay (42) made more runs than J McKay (not many) and an excellent last wicket stand of 51 by Greg Summers (41) and Andrew Coleman (23*). This took the first innings total to a slightly under par, but nevertheless challenging 219 all out.

Captain Britton fired up his men at the tea interval and was almost rewarded first ball when Jerrom had a caught behind decision declined. The Ilford opener stood his ground proclaiming that the ball had hit his forearm, which was ‘hotly disputed’ by the fielders. Whilst accepting that the umpires decision was final, R McKay proceeded to make the next 20 minutes as thoroughly unpleasant for the batsman as it was possible to be. The Australians would call it ‘good hard cricket’.

From the other end, Rotsey had the other opener caught at slip for 0. It was by club cricket standards a brilliant low reaction catch by Brathwaite diving one handed to his left. Thereafter, the wickets fell steadily, the match winning wicket being claimed by Summers when he had the aforementioned opener caught for 74 out of a 105 team total. This was the inspiration F & H needed to claim the 20 points that would put them back on top of the league.

Coleman, Summers and Jerrom all bowled well, with man of the match Summers claiming 4-46 from a restricted 10 overs. In the midst of these wickets was another Brathwaite slip catch dismissal, which must be a contender for catch of the season, amateur or professional. Think of Strauss in the 2005 ashes and you will be about right. No match report can do it justice, you had to witness it. Jerrom was the deserved bowler benefactor.

To their credit the Ilford lower order batted well and looked on target for a desperately needed win, until a mix up between the final pair allowed McKay J to complete a sharp run out to win the game for F & H, with only 13 runs and 12 balls to spare.
