Upminster v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 4 Wickets
Match report
After much mid-week rain had created a two paced wicket slow and slower, Fives and Heronians won the toss and incerted the home the side. Nick Rotsey (4-53) led the attack with a fine display of swing bowling reducing the home side to 36/5 with a combination of shooting deliveries and poor shot execution giving the visitors hope of an early finish. He was ably supported by the accuracy of Chris White (4-35), but the job was only half done. Eventually Upminster got to grips with what was required on a dificult surface Aggio-Brewe was careful to start with then played some fine off drives to finish 2 short of what would have been a fully justified 50. Together with solid contributions from the tail Upminster had scored a competitive 187/9 on a tricky drying wicket.
With Brathwaite in such fine form of late the vistors started the tricky chase in confident fashion and victory never looked in doubt, together with Britton the openers eased to 65 without loss. Then a couple of poor shots created hope and nerves in equal quantity for the home side and the chasing Fives and Heronians. Tyler (4-53) and Aggio-Brewe (2-64) had suddely strangled the run rate which had now risen to a testing 6 an over, but with Brathwaite and White still at the crease victory seemed inevitable. Then calamity struck as the run machine that has been Braths all season holed out, lobbing a full toss to midwicket to send the dressing room into panic. It was left to Chris White to take on the mantle with 30 to win with 5 overs remaining, luck played its part as a couple of dropped catches off lusty blows brought the run rate down, one of which was goalkeeper style tipped over the bar for 6. Young Ben Lloyd showed immense composure to finish the job hitting successive fours to give Fives and Heronians victory with an over to spare.
A good victory in what was patchy display with some cool heads from experience and youth alike.
