Brentwood v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 08 Aug 2009 at 1 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 37 runs
Match report
Starting the day 10 or so points behind Chelmsford in top spot, nothing less than a Fives win would be good enough to ensure the championship push remained on target. A resurgent Brentwood team stood in the way of maximum points, a task made more difficult when Brentwood won the toss and elected to bowl. Still, an opening pair of Braithwaite and Nick Rotsey would surely get us off to a fine start?
Although looking in good touch, the swinging ball proved dominant in the early stages of our innings and both batsmen played and missed. However it was an unfortunate decision that accounted for Nick. Given out caught behind, when LBW would have been nearer the mark. This opened the stage for a recalled Robert McKay to step up and he immediately took the game to Brentwood playing a number of "hockey" slaps and upper cuts. The last of the latter ending up with him being caught at third man. With the early flurry of excitement over Neil and James McKay set about building a solid base for a target score of around 240 to 250.
The innings wasn't going to go exactly to plan though and with Neil and James getting out after posting half centuries, wickets fell at regular intervals as various players tried to up the run rate on an increasingly spin friendly pitch, well exploited by the Brentwood bowlers. A poor score was averted however with some steely lower order resilliance from Mark Hutchinson and Greg Summers who complemented a few well chosen launches from Chris White to end the Fives' innings with a below par but defendable 202 all out.
The tea was a decent effort and a special mention should go to the sausage sandwiches which were very decent indeed.
With refreshments over Fives took to the field knowing that containment allied to early breakthroughs was key to success. Sadly neither was forthcoming. Andy Coleman bowled his usual 3 "warm up" overs to get his creaking joints going and Jack Jerrom bowled with good purpose but no luck. Chris White threw down what can only be described as 3 batsmen friendly overs which propelled Brentwood to 68 for none and Fives staring down the barrel.
Enter then Andy Coleman and James McKay. A combination of canny medium pace from James and tweaking off spin from Andy. Wickets fell regularly and Fives took control of the game. Brentwood got back into it with a good innings from one of their younger players but his fellow batsmen failed to offer enough support. Fives' fielding was also on song, epitomised with a excellent diving catch at long off from captain Keith and a run out from James, denying the opposition the opportunity to chance their luck.
When Andy bowled their last bat, Brentwood were still 30-odd short and a deserved victory was earned for Fives. James ended up with 4 wickets and Andy with another 5-fer (the author notes that abandoning seam bowling in favour of off-spin, does seem the way forward!).
The 20 points taken were exactly what was needed at the start of the day and we now have a great chance to pick-up some silverware (or a blue pennant to be more precise) if we can keep the good performances coming.
