Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Wanstead on Sat 15 Aug 2009 at 1 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 43 runs

Match report Hosting Wanstead at the Paddock, just 3 points behind league leaders Chelmsford, the skipper Keith Oram faced a dilemma after winning the toss on a superb track, chase as usual or gamble on winning bowling second to gain the maximum twenty points. After much hesitation the he decided to back his troops to come up with the maximum.

Brathwaite and Rotsey started innings in fine fashion hitting one of the Wanstead opening bowlers Rahman out of the attack after only 3 overs , but Awan his partner struck back immediately removing Rotsey for only 7. Britton started in admirable fashion showing the intent of the Fives batting order to attack at every opportunity and not let the Wanstead attack settle at all. Together with Braithwaite the tempo was set with some fine drives and vicious cuts from Britton. Maddin and the visitors captain Cade were brought on to try and stem the flow of runs with immediate success with Britton failing for an all too brief 29. Fives for all their intent were rocking at 65-2, not the start that was intended. Similar to the Brentwood match it was left to Mckay to rebuild with Braithwaite in a partnership of over 100. Mckay initially outshone his partner with some effortless drives as anything loose was caressed effortlessly to the boundary rope as Wanstead heads seem to drop. The visitors were given brief respite when Mckay lost concentration and holed out a deep midwicket for a fine 57. With time of the essence Kerr in only his second innings of the season looked like a man on a mission as he joined Brathwaite, within an over or two he had already deposited 3 balls out of the ground and Braithwaite liked what he saw and joined in as carnage ensued at both ends. As the clock hit 3.50pm time was called on the innings as Fives had amassed 305-3 off 45 overs, Kerr finishing with a destructive 63, but the star of the show yet again was the seemingly unstoppable Brathwaite, who had displayed a fine array of stroke play in an unbeaten 123. The job was only half done if Fives and Heronians would continue to push for the title.

As Fives and Heronians took the field you could sense the intensity in the air as the opening bowlers Coleman and Jerrom took the new ball and made it count it what could be called test match wickets falling at both ends. Wanstead were soon reeling at 29-4 as both bowlers took it in turns to remove batsman with top class new ball bowling 3 of which were caught at slip and one caught behind by Britton deputising with the gloves manfully. Once the new ball effect was seen off the quality of the home wicket was there for all to see as Jennings and Velani put on over 100, to see Wanstead handily placed to make an assault in the massive run chase. The removal of Jennings and Maddin in quick succession put paid to any run chase, as time was ebbing away and not enough wickets in hand were left to chase the 140 required in the 16 overs remaining. So a draw seemed the inevitable result which was of no use to the home side in their championship push. With Velani in fine form on a good wicket some inviting slow bowling by Coleman was the only option to entice the visitors into maintaining their run chase. After a few overs of fine hitting the run rate reduced giving hope to Wanstead that the impossible might be on especially as Velani was still at the crease having completed a majestic 100. A couple of the home side started to believe that Velani might take the match away them, but Coleman as his want, struck at the right moment to end the accomplished innings by the young batsman. The forlorn hope of victory was still in the forefront of Wanstead’s tail with Rahman in particular striking the ball to the boundary with regularity, it was left to White to come back and stop the tail in its tracks. He came on and Rahman holed out to Kerr at mid on and trap number 11 plumb in front 1st ball to much jubilation for the home side.

In what was an engaging run chase Wanstead lost by 43 runs, Fives and Heronians gambled that to win you have to be willing to lose. With that type of outlook winning the league is still a possibility with 3 matches to go, it will be a close run thing.
