Match report Fives and Heronians progressed to round 3 of the National Cup with a 2nd round win over Bishops Stortford at The Paddock by 65 runs.

Having elected to bat first, Fives made a quick start thanks to wicket keeper and recent recruit Jason Whiting who smashed 41 off just 22 balls (5 fours, 3 sixes) before he holed out with the score 58-1 inside the first 10 overs of the 45 overs-a-side match.

Rahul Bhome came in at number 3 and made 18 off 33 balls with 2 fours and 1 six before going caught and bowled and then a 3rd wicket partnership of 74 between Glenn Jackson (33 off 35 with 5 fours) and Gordon Whorlow who top scored with a stout 55 off 105 balls (4 fours, 1 six) ticked the hosts along to 184-4 before both fell attempting to accelerate the score.

Fives lost their way a little in the closing overs but Phil Apps kept the middle and lower order together with a rapid 40 off 39 balls (2 fours and 1 six) before he was last man out off the penultimate ball of the innings as Fives reached 248 all out.

The Stortford reply began positively until Herts player Luke Padgett clipped Jamie Porter to captain Gary Edwards at mid-wicket for 10. Keeper Whiting then took two superb catches standing-up - the first a sharp high edge off seamer Chris White, the second a low edge from spinner Rahul Bhome - as Bishops fell to 83-5.

Resistance came from skipper Simon Lindop (36 off 37) and Harry Bass (43 off 63) with a 6th wicket stand of 82 but Jamie Porter came back to clean bowl top scorer Bass and then trapped Lindop lbw before collecting two more wickets to finish with superb figures of 5-35 off 9 overs as Bishops were eventually all out for a spirited 183 with 6 overs of their 45 not used.

Chris White also bowled well in collecting 2-25 off 6 overs with 1 maiden with the economical Rahul Bhome (1-19 off 8) and Johnny Kay (1-30 off 7 with 2 maidens) also amongst the wickets.

A good win on a baking hot May afternoon played in good spirits. Fives now host Middlesex side Winchmore Hill at The Paddock on Sunday 14th June in the 3rd round.
