Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Sunday Cup XI v Winchmore Hill on Sun 14 Jun 2009 at 1.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost By 2 Wickets
Match report
Fives and Heronians fell out of the ECB National Cup in the 3rd round by 2 wickets to Middlesex Premier side Winchmore Hill in another thrilling finish at The Paddock.
The hosts had their chances to progress to what would have been a home tie in the area final as Hill were struggling on 100-6 and then 143-7 in pursuit of what seemed a modest Fives total of 211 all out but 6 dropped catches prevented the Chigwell side from an extended stay in this seasons competition.
Having won the toss and electing to bat, Fives lost Jason Whiting bowled to former Gloucestershire and Middlesex paceman David Burton for just 1 after his previous days’ efforts and then Gordon Whorlow for 13 to the same method as Burton finished with 2-24 having bowled out his allotted 9 overs from the start.
Ed Buxton and Carlos Remy shared 27 for the 3rd wicket before Buxton was bowled by James Gatting, son of Mike, for 29 off 56 (5 fours) before the same bowler snared Glenn Jackson for just 1.
At 62-4 batting was tough going in swinging conditions but skipper Terry Ballard and Remy played positively as Hill’s spinners came on and leaked runs. Ballard reinvigorated the innings with 31 off just 23 balls (4 fours and 1 six) before holing out after adding 56 for the 5th wicket and then another quick-fire stand of 47 between Phil Apps and Remy lifted Fives to 165 until Remy was sixth out caught off Gatting after making an excellent 63 off 70 balls which included 6 fours and 1 maximum.
Gatting’s returned to the attack also accounted for Bhome (21 off 24 balls, 1x4, 1x6) and then Apps for 23 (34 balls, 5x4) after their 29 run partnership and from 194-6 Fives fell to 199-9 with run machine Gary Edwards also going bowled for just 3.
The last wicket pairing of Chris White (8 not out) and Johnny Kay (5) produced a lusty blow each as 12 were added to take the hosts final score up to a respectable 211, a score which was around 20 short of a total which looked possible at one stage, with 1 over of the 45 unused.
Fives then made a good fist about defending their total as regular wickets fell in the Winchmore reply. Johnny Kay had Oli Adamson caught behind by Jackson down the leg side for 12 (17-1) and Carlos Remy bowled the Hill captain Neil Hurst for 9 (51-2) before he then picked up a back problem and was only able to bowl 4 overs (1-4).
The five overs Remy wasn’t able to bowl turned out to be crucial blow as he looked inspired against his former club but once Rahul Bhome started to weave his web of spin the prospects were still in Fives favour.
Bhome collected an incredible 3-14 from his 9 overs including 2 maidens as he got Burton to drive to Kay at long-on for 25 going for the short boundary, he then bowled through the defences of Gatting for a painstaking 21, caught Kyle Bacchus-Brown off his own bowling then took another catch this time at mid-off as Bowen fell to Gordon Whorlow and Hill fell to 100-6.
Dan Amedee (28 off 19) launched a counter-attack before he too fell to Whorlow with Ballard taking an amazing catch at square-leg with the ball appearing to be behind him before clutching it out from thin air.
Danny Barker (29) and Faisal Mir then turned the game in the visitors favour with an 8th wicket stand of 44 before Kay returned to have Barker caught at long-on by Whorlow with the score 187-8 and 25 still required for victory.
Fives had turned favourites for the match but Mir kept his cool with some quick running and big hits as he clipped the winning runs off the first ball of the last over to finish unbeaten on 47 having come to the crease at number 9 and saw his side to a 2 wicket win.
Catches win matches and Fives usual high standard of fielding cost them dear but despite being knocked out of the National, Fives still have the Conference Cup, SNEL Cup and Cockspur Twenty20 Cup to play for.
