Match report A very young and under strength U16 side visited Wanstead's 2nd ground, Nutter Lane, in the matchplay quarter final. It was always going to be a tough task against a very strong side with a lot of depth, and so it proved. After a superb 1st 20 overs in the field, when Wanstead were only on 70-1, the old adage of keeping wickets in hand rang true, as the Wanstead top order proceeded to smash the ball to all parts, amassing a massive 187 runs in the 2nd 20 overs, ending up on 257-6 off their allotted 40 overs.

We were never at the races with the bat as our big guns didnt get the big scores required to give us a chance. Some of the youngsters applied themselves well towards the end of the innings but we were well beaten by then and eventually ended up 159-8, losing by 98 runs. It was a shame that so many of the 1st XI away on hols as we could have given Wanstead a much better game with a full strength side, but that could not be helped. One of those things and a case of what might have been.
Thanks to all the players and parents for their efforts this year and I wish them all the best as they hopefully carry on their cricketing careers at Fives.
