Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v South Woodford on Sat 21 Sep 2002 at 1-00pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 24 runs
Match report
F&H batted first and were soon in command thanks to James Swash (and NOT stodgy Graham
Neary who scored 7 in an opening partnership of 50). An unbeaten 5th wicket partnership of 86
between Kirandeep Bansal (40*) and Ian Rotsey (44*) enabled the skipper to declare at the
required 250 score off 41 overs.
After an enjoyable tea of Strawberries & Cream, South Woodford set about our opening attack.
The introduction of spin twins Mark Wheeler (3-68 off 17 overs) and Derek Maddison
(3-72 off 12 overs) enabled us to initially stem the flow of runs by obtaining wickets. South
Woodford though required 108 in the last 20 overs with 5 wickets left. In the first 10 overs in
the last hour, there was some large 6s and 2 wickets coming in one over from Ian Rotsey as
South Woodford kept up with the asking rate but lost key wickets at important times. Even at
212-9, South Woodford were still chasing an improbable victory with some lusty blows from their
skipper Peter Shirt. In the end we took the final South Woodford wicket with just over 3 overs
remaining. An excellent game of cricket played in a wonderful spirit on a lovely sunny day.
