Match report Fives were disappointed to lose the toss and take the field against a strong West Essex side. Stuart made an early breakthrough with a sharp catch in the gully by Alex who was later to take another excellent catch at wide long on. At the other end, Shiren Patel in his first match of the summer bowled a tight spell of 8 overs, one for five. Pressure was maintained by Nilhil with four overs one for six after which Uncle Bob wheedled his way through the rest of the West Essex batting to pick up another five-fer.

An uncut outfield and dampness in the pitch meant that the total of 131 was probably worth 175 on the usual Frenford strip. West Essex produced two bowlers of high quality to open the attack. Bowling fast and straight they reduced Fives to 1 for 2 in the third over and 22 for 3 in the ninth. While the Skipper dropped anchor at one end, first Alex and then Irfan's dad, Sid, took the attack to the opposition with some powerful blows. When twelve year old Nikhil entered, almost 50 was still needed to win. He showed great maturity and stood firm with the Skipper until the win was secured with 15 overs to spare.

This was the last League match for the Academy Squad which has done exceptionally well to finish second in the League in its first season. Over 40 players were used with the mix usually being 3-4 old gits and 7-8 youngsters, allowing good experience to be passed on. We look forward to a few more friendly games this year and, of course, to next season!
