Hornchurch 5th X1 v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 07 May 2016 at 1pm

Match report
Fives lost the toss and were inserted. Due to Uncle Yaz being stuck in traffic, Billy Amas volunteered to move up to open and produced a very solid innings. Resisting the temptation to slog when tied down, he worked his way to 48 before being run out trying for a second to reach 50. The rest batted around him with useful contributions from Uriel, Dave Paris and Jai. Uncle Yaz, having settled after his late arrival, produced an impressive 37 and looked close to his best after a year off with a serious calf injury. Late order impetus was provided by the captain hitting his first ball for 6 and inspiring Kasey to hit three of his own in a rapid undefeated 40. An early declaration at 43 overs was designed to give us an extra two overs but confusion over the new rules did not allow this to happen. Clarification will be sought from the League.
Hornchurch were in difficulties straight away when confronted by our equivalent of Glen McGrath and Steve Harmison. Nick Shirlaw bowled with superb accuracy in the channel and went past the edge countless times, unfortunately without the rewards he deserved. At the other end Kasey hurled down thunderbolts and without actually hitting second slip was a little wayward at times. Jack Dempsey in his first men's game took a good catch at short leg which inspired Kasey to aim at the stumps for once and clean out their number three. Unfortunately too many deliveries were off target to achieve maximum effect. First change bowlers Uriel and Yaz both beat the bat on many occasions and both were very unlucky not to pick up wickets. Yaz was particularlt economical conceding only 10 runs from his 6 overs. To get a breakthough, Jai was brought on with an interesting mix of hand grenades and darts. He did follow the captain's perrenial advice to bowl as many straight ones as he could (not that many as it happens) but two were on target and hit the stumps following wild swipes. By this time Hornchurch were totally out of it and an attempt to blast out the tail by bringing back the openers only brought one further wicket.
